Officials Education Pathway

The Australian Athletics Officials Education Scheme (AAOES) is a joint initiative of Athletics Australia and Coles Little Athletics Australia, providing a seamless and transparent education pathway for Australian Athletics Officials.

The scheme is endorsed by the Australian Sports Commission and follows best industry practice, with online learning coupled with face-to-face delivery.  The aim of the AAOES is to ensure that an effective and efficient education framework is provided to guarantee Australian Athletics Officials remain world leaders in event delivery at all levels of athletic competition.

For more information on the levels of accreditation and training opportunities that are most relevant for Little Athletics please see the Entry Level (level 0) and the Intermediate Level (level 1-2) boxes below.

Level 0 - Introduction to OfficiatingThe Introductory Officiating General Principles free on-line course has been developed to assist Officials in learning the basic skills they will need to officiate effectively.This is not compulsory for Athletics Officials but is strongly recommended.The course contains three modules, which cover a range of general officiating topics, including ethical responsibilities of Officials, preparation for officiating, safety, communication, dealing with conflict and people management.Introduce yourself to the world of officiating! Level 0 - Introduction to Officiating

The Introductory Officiating General Principles free on-line course has been developed to assist Officials in learning the basic skills they will need to officiate effectively.

This is not compulsory for Athletics Officials but is strongly recommended.

The course contains three modules, which cover a range of general officiating topics, including ethical responsibilities of Officials, preparation for officiating, safety, communication, dealing with conflict and people management.

AAOES Level 1 - Officials CourseSuitable for individuals who wish to help at their local centre, the Level 1 Officiating courses are done online and are free-of-charge. There is no requirement for a practical assessment.Candidates must complete online learning and pass a multiple-choice quiz. The learning and quiz will focus on ensuring the candidate has a basic understanding of the rules of the discipline they are attempting.Become an accredited official! Level 1 online courses and more information available HERE.AAOES Level 2 - Officials CourseLevel 2 is the next step up and is targeted at Officials wishing to be appointed at a State or National level.In Level 2, candidates will be required to complete practical requirements, attend seminars, complete online learning components and complete an exam. Rather than just testing the rules, candidates will be required to apply the rules and interpret certain situations.Before attempting Level 2, Officials must have successfully completed learning at Level 1.Take the next step! In Level 2, candidates will be required to complete practical requirements, attend seminars, complete online learning components and complete an exam. Rather than just testing the rules, candidates will be required to apply the rules and interpret certain situations.

Before attempting Level 2, Officials must have successfully completed learning at Level 1.

Little Athletics NSW offers an entry-level, free, practical face-to-face session, which is perfect for anyone wanting to improve their knowledge and skills to be able to assist with centre, club or zone level activities or simply help their own children.

Intermediate Level: Officiating Seminars

Little Athletics NSW offers intermediate level officiating seminars, which are designed to develop and refresh each participant’s officiating skills and knowledge.

These seminars are intended for individuals wishing to progress from a Level 1 to Level 2 accreditation or maintain there accreditation.
